Colicin typing of Shigella sonnei.
The colicin typing method for differentiating epidemic strains of Shigella sonnei was evaluated. Forty percent of the strains were untypable, but the method divides 60% of the strains into 15 established colicin types. The method has reasonably good reproducibility, but should not be interpreted with the same degree of confidence as some other characteristics such as serotypes. For this reason,...

A bacteriophage-typing schema was developed for differentiating strains of Shigella sonnei. Sixty-seven bacteriophages were obtained from other collections, and 36 bacteriophages were isolated from sewage. From these 103 bacteriophages, a provisional set of 12 was chosen by computer analysis as being the most sensitive in differentiating strains of S. sonnei isolated in the United States. The p...
متن کاملA method for typing Shigella sonnei, using colicine production as a marker.
Infection with Shigella sonnei is the most common identifiable cause of diarrhoea in this country at present, and the absence of a satisfactory method of typing the organism has greatly hampered the study of its mode of spread. Bojlen (1934), studying the biochemical reactions of 1,786 Sonne cultures, isolated from 741 patients in Denmark, described four biochemical types based upon the ferment...

Two-hundred and twenty-five strains of Shigella sonnei isolated from sporadic cases of bacillary dysentery were subjected to colicine typing. The result showed that types 15 and 12 were the prevailing types in Hong Kong and two new types which did not fit in with the colicine patterns of the current types were observed. A marked increase in the numbers of strains concurrently resistant to chlor...
متن کاملMacrolide-Resistant Shigella sonnei
Shigella sonnei UCN59, isolated during an outbreak of S. sonnei in January 2007, was resistant to azithromycin (MIC 64 mg/L). The isolate contained a plasmid-borne mph(A) gene encoding a macrolide 2 -phosphotransferase that inactivates macrolides. Emergence of the mph(A) gene in S. sonnei may limit usefulness of azithromycin for treatment of shigellosis.
